Title :Participation of local communities in the reintroduction of Eastern Sarus Cranes in Buriram Province

Abstract :
Public participation is a fundamental tool in wildlife reintroduction programs, particularly for bird species which have ranges beyond the boundaries of protected areas. For Nakonratchasima Zoo’s Eastern sarus crane (Grusantigonesharpii) reintroduction program into Huey Jorrakemak andSanambinnam Non-hunting areas, Buiram Province; the public participation campaign were conducted using 3 methods. First is disseminating correct information about crane conservation to the public through local newspapers, radios and television. Second is by conducting educational workshops for local school children. Third is by public hearing, where all parties got together to share experiences and concerns to reach a common census.
The message of the conservation awareness and educational programs were further tailored according to the target audience group: First, people who live within a 10 kilometer radius of either Huey Jorrakemak orSanambinnam Non-hunting areas, Buiram Province. Second, groups of local youth within a radius of not more than 30 Kilometers from the released areas.Third, people who live outside the released areas but who can recognize and gain access to the published information on the project. Through this conservation awareness and educational programs, listening and involving the local people in the decision making process has resulted in a common goal between the zoo and local community to conserve the Eastern sarus crane for future generations.
