Western Koel (Eudynamys scolopaceus)

Interesting :

The Common Koel is the bird in Cuculidae family which has the same size as the crow. It has long slender body, red eyes, long and hard tail. Its feet which use to hold on the branch have the special character which is different from those of other. It can hold around the branch with 2 front toes and 2 back toes. The male is black with greenish grey mouth. The female is dark brown and has white dots all over its body.

Habitat :

Can be found in the garden, or sparse forest in every region of Thailand.

Food :

It likes to eat insect, some kind of snake, chameleon, skink, frog, tadpole, small bird and some kind of fruit.

Behavior :

The Common Koel has the fierce behavior and does not like to change its sleeping place. It stays in pairs. The male has the loud and echo voice at dawn and dusk. It will cry a lot in the winter and autumn which are the breeding season. It normally cries “ Ka Wow” but the female has no voice.

Reproductive :

This bird will mate approximately the beginning of November. It lays eggs approximately in March. It lays 2 to 4 eggs each time. It lays egg in the crow’s nest and its eggs are similar to the crow’s eggs. It lays eggs and the crow will incubate the eggs. The eggs can be found in the crow’s nest for 8 eggs. When the chick hatches out, the chick is all the same black. When it grows up, the male chick of the Common Koel will have the same black. The female feathers will change to dark brown with the white dots all over the body.
